Outlet & Switch Repair Services: Fast, Safe & Reliable

Outlets and switches get used thousands of times a year, and most people never give them a second thought until one stops working. A dead outlet is an inconvenience. A sparking outlet or a switch that feels warm is something else entirely. At GSS757, our licensed master electrician handles outlet and switch repair across Virginia Beach and Chesapeake with the same care we bring to every project. We fix the small stuff right the first time, we catch the bigger issues before they become fires, and we leave every install up to code. Call 757-581-3572 for a free estimate and work you can count on.

Outlet Problems We Repair

Outlets fail in a handful of common ways. Here is what we see most often in 757 area homes.

  • Dead or non-working outlets. Often the result of a tripped GFCI upstream, a loose wire, or a bad outlet. We find the root cause and fix it.
  • Loose outlets that don’t hold plugs. The contacts inside the outlet wear out over time. A cord that falls out on its own is a safety issue and needs a replacement.
  • Outlets that spark. A small flash when plugging in is sometimes normal. A visible arc, smoke, or repeated sparking is not and needs immediate attention.
  • Warm outlets or a burning smell. Heat at an outlet points to a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. This is a fire risk and should not wait.
  • GFCI outlet tripping or not resetting. GFCIs protect wet areas from shock. If one keeps tripping or will not reset, the outlet, the wiring, or a downstream issue needs attention.
  • Two-prong to three-prong outlet upgrades. Older homes often have two-prong outlets with no ground. We upgrade them the right way, either by adding a ground or installing a GFCI where a ground is not available.
  • USB & USB-C outlet installation. A simple upgrade that clears the charging brick clutter in bedrooms, kitchens, and offices.

Switch Problems We Repair

Switches fail for many of the same reasons outlets do, and most are easy fixes when caught early.

  • Switches that don’t work. A dead switch usually points to a loose connection, a failed switch, or a problem with the fixture it controls.
  • Dimmer switch issues. Buzzing, flickering, or dimmers that cut out often mean the switch is not rated for the load or the bulbs are not dimmer-compatible.
  • Three-way switch problems. Switches at the top and bottom of a staircase or at two ends of a hallway can get miswired. We trace the circuit and restore proper function.
  • Switch replacement for style upgrades. Swapping old toggle switches for rocker switches, or upgrading to decorative plates that match your finishes.
  • Smart switch installation. Installing Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora Smart, and other smart switches that work with Alexa, Google Home, or Apple HomeKit.

GFCI & AFCI Outlets:
What Are They & Do You Need Them?

GFCI stands for ground fault circuit interrupter. It cuts power fast if it senses a ground fault, which is what happens when electricity takes an unintended path, often through water or a person. GFCIs are required in bathrooms, kitchens, laundry areas, garages, outdoor outlets, and within six feet of sinks. If your home was built before these rules took effect, or if the original GFCIs have failed, an upgrade is a smart move. AFCI stands for arc fault circuit interrupter. It cuts power when it senses an electrical arc, which is a common cause of house fires. Current code requires AFCI protection on most residential circuits. GSS757 installs both and can walk you through where your home actually needs them.

When to Replace vs. Repair an Outlet or Switch

Not every issue calls for a replacement. Here is how we make the call. Repair makes sense when the wiring behind the outlet is in good shape and the problem is a loose connection, a tripped GFCI upstream, or a bad terminal that can be rewired. Replacement is the right move when the outlet or switch itself has failed, when plastic shows heat damage, when contacts have worn out, or when the outlet is a two-prong type that needs to come up to modern code. For homes older than 30 years with original outlets and switches throughout, a room-by-room replacement is often the best long-term answer. We give you an honest call either way, not a sales pitch.

Outlet Upgrades to Consider

A few small upgrades make a real difference in how a home works day to day.

USB-C charging outlets

Cut the cord clutter by charging phones, tablets, and earbuds directly from the wall.

Smart outlets

Control lamps, fans, or appliances from an app or by voice.

GFCI upgrades for kitchen, bathroom, & garage

Required by current code and a smart safety upgrade even if your home predates the rule.

Tamper-resistant outlets

Built-in shutters that keep small fingers and foreign objects out. Required by code for new construction and worth adding in homes with young children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my outlet have no power?

The most common cause is a tripped GFCI somewhere upstream on the same circuit, often in a bathroom, kitchen, or garage. Find it and press reset. If that does not bring the outlet back, check the breaker. If the breaker is on and the GFCIs are all reset, the outlet itself or the wiring behind it has a problem and needs a pro to diagnose.

A small, quick spark when you plug something in is usually normal. A visible arc, smoke, repeated sparking, or a spark with a burning smell is an emergency. Stop using the outlet, shut off the breaker, and call us at 757-581-3572 right away.

Yes. We install Lutron, Leviton, Kasa, and most other major smart switch brands. Some smart switches need a neutral wire in the box, which older homes do not always have, and we work around that when we run into it.

A single outlet or switch repair is affordable and quick. Costs go up when the wiring behind the fixture needs work, when multiple outlets on a circuit all need attention, or when the job includes GFCI or AFCI upgrades. We give you a free written estimate after the visit.
